Is Internet Explorer 6 still supported?

Good question! Let me throw some stat’s at you to create a picture:

  • IE accounts for around 53% of users
  • 10% of IE are on IE6, the rest are on IE7 or IE8
  • Looking at the trend, at the beginning of 2009 IE6 was around the 16% (15.63% to be exact!) so it’s dropping by around 1%/month. With the advent of IE8, I think it will continue to drop.

In ‘english’, a few years ago, there weren't many different versions of web browsers to choose from, now however, there are dozens. Actually, there are over 100 different browsers, not counting different versions of the same product. Choice is a wonderful thing, but the proliferation of browser software can cause a few headaches when developing a site.

Our take on this is that we are always mindful of IE6 and other minority browser users when we are developing and in particular, designing a website, but to ensure we maximise the experience for the majority of users in the way of functionality, capability as well as the look and feel of a website, sometimes things don’t always ‘behave’ that well in the likes of IE6.

So in short, we are mindful of the likes of IE6, but we recommend not getting bogged down in issues around these browsers as it can end up soaking up a lot of resources for very little gain.
